Ten years ago today (August 25, 2001) news spread that 22 year-old R&B singer, Aaliyah, died in a small twin-engine plane crash after taking off from the Bahamas.
Aaliyah was in the Bahamas shooting a video for her 2001 music video, “Rock The Boat”.
Aaliyah and eight others died in that accident, including her stylist, Eric Forman, her makeup artists, Anthony Dodd and Christopher Maldonado, her security guard, Scott Gallin, her video producer, Douglas Kratz, and two Blackground Record Co. employees.
Also, the pilot died in the crash. The pilot was not licensed at the time that the accident occurred and the toxicology report found traces of cocaine and alcohol in his system.
Aaliyah’s family ended up filing a wrongful death suit against the aircraft charter rental and leasing company out of the Bahamas, Blackhawk International Airways. The parties settled the matter outside of court.

Aaliyah had a very successful career as a teenager. She was first signed at age 12 to Jive Records, which is when she was introduced to pervey R. Kelly.
Aaliyah left Jive Records after rumors spread that she married R. Kelly, as a minor. For those of you who don’t know, R. Kelly has always been a pervert.
It’s a good thing that Aaliyah moved on though because after she signed with Atlantic Records she started working with producers Timberland and Missy Elliot on her new album ‘One in a Million’, which sold 3.7 million copies in the U.S.
Aaliyah’s single “Try Again”, which was recorded for the film, “Romeo Must Die”, topped Billboard’s Hot 100 based on the amount of times it was played on the radio alone, which was the first time that that record had ever been achieved during Billboard’s Hot 100 history.
